MacGregor Rob Roy: Hunting Tartan -- " I Will Complete the Course"

There are so many types of tartans to choose from with endless variations in color and patterns. According to the Scottish Clans website, there are more than 2,000 tartans! One of our best-selling tartans is our MacGregor Rob Roy Hunting Tartan with its distinctive check pattern of black stripes on a field of moss green. A hunting tartan is traditionally made with darker and more natural colors than most other tartans. This is to help the wearers blend in with the countryside and forests of the Scottish Highlands.

The name, Hunter Tartan dates to 1116 and relates to William Hunter who lived in the Ayrshire area. His name, the first record of the surname Hunter was obviously an excellent hunter. He was such a respected hunter that he was  appointed as "Royal Huntsman" by King David I of Scotland. The members of his family were allowed to keep this honorary title and, the surname Hunter was officially adopted by their clan. The original Gaelic is Clann an t-Sealgair. The Hunter Clan Crest features a greyhound, which is naturally a hunting dog, to symbolize the surname Hunter. Their motto surrounding the Crest is "Cursum Perficio" which translates from Latin to "I will complete the course."

Throughout Scotland's turbulent history, the Hunter Clan has shown consistent support to Scottish Royalty. Today, Clan Hunter is located in North Ayrshire, just southwest of Glasgow. They have remained in the area since the beginning of the 12th century. Hunterston Castle has been the seat of this clan for more than 900 years with construction starting in the 15th century and additions and renovations added through the years.

The fall hunting season is around the corner and our MacGregor Rob Roy Hunting Tartan is perfect for an "in the field" adventure.
